Non-Fiction Books

  1. Main Idea and Supporting Details:
    • What is the main idea of the book?
    • Can you find three supporting details that help explain the main idea?
  2. Vocabulary:
    • Write down three new words you learned from the book. What do they mean?
    • Can you use each new word in a sentence?
  3. Text Features:
    • What kind of text features did you notice in the book (e.g., headings, photographs, captions)?
    • How did these text features help you understand the information better?
  4. Making Connections:
    • Can you relate something in the book to your own experiences or things you already know?
    • Did reading this book remind you of something else you’ve read or seen before?
  5. Asking Questions:
    • What questions do you still have after reading the book?
    • How could you find the answers to these questions?
  6. Author’s Purpose:
    • Why do you think the author wrote this book?
    • Was the author trying to teach, inform, entertain, or persuade?
  7. Summarizing:
    • Can you summarize the main points of the book in your own words?
    • What was the most important thing you learned from this book?
  8. Comparing and Contrasting:
    • How is the information in this book similar to or different from other books you’ve read on the same topic?
    • Which book do you prefer, and why?
  9. Predictions:

  10. Critical Thinking:

Fiction Books

  1. Who are the main characters in the story? Can you describe them?
  2. What is the setting of the book? Where and when does the story take place?
  3. What problem or challenge do the characters face in the story?
  4. How do the characters try to solve the problem? Do they succeed?
  5. What was your favorite part of the story? Why?
  6. Did the book teach you anything new or interesting?
  7. If you could change one thing about the story, what would it be? Why?
  8. Did you like the ending of the book? Why or why not?
  9. Can you find any words or phrases in the book that you didn’t understand? What do you think they mean?
  10. Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
